Specializing in Exotic Scandinavian & Heritage Poultry

My Heart

Welcome to our Farm

American-born of Swedish Ancestry, I am so blessed to have lived abroad in Australia and traveled the world extensively with my wonderful husband, John.

We chose this lovely State of Connecticut to start our small 6-acre Farm, where we will breed extremely rare Scandinavian and European Heritage poultry.

Hedemora - Ultra Exotic

The Hedemora is a breed of domestic chicken that originated in Sweden. It is known for its distinctive appearance and hardy characteristics, making it well-suited for cold climates. The Hedemora chicken is

believed to be the most robust chicken breed in the world.

  1. Origin: The Hedemora chicken comes from the town of Hedemora in Dalarna, Sweden. It's a local breed developed over many years to thrive in the harsh Nordic climate.
  2. Appearance: Hedemora chickens are typically relatively small with a compact and robust build. Their unique appearance is characterized by their irregular, multicolored, EXTREMELY SOFT, FUR-LIKE plumage. Their feathers can come in black, gray, brown, and white shades.
  3. Hardiness: One of the main attributes of Hedemora chickens is their hardiness. They are well-adapted to cold and harsh climates, making them well-suited for free-range and outdoor environments, especially in Northern Europe.
  4. Temperament: Hedemora chickens are known for being calm and docile, making them a good choice for backyard flocks or small farms. Their friendly nature can make them easier to handle and interact with.
  5. Egg Production: While the Hedemora breed primarily focuses not on egg production, they do lay a reasonable number of eggs and lay consistently through the cold winters.
  6. Conservation Status: The Hedemora chicken is considered a rare breed and is classified as "endangered" by various organizations that promote heritage and traditional poultry breeds. Efforts are being made to conserve and promote the breed to prevent it from becoming extinct.
  7. Utility: While Hedemora chickens are not typically raised for meat production, their meat is flavorful and high-quality. However, due to their smaller size, they might not yield as much meat as larger meat-focused breeds.

 Historical Significance:

The Hedemora chicken breed has a long history in Sweden and is considered a national treasure.

Swedish farmers traditionally kept them for both their meat and eggs.       The breed's hardiness, adaptability to cold climates, and ability to forage made them well-suited to the Scandinavian environment. However, with the rise of industrialized agriculture and commercial poultry breeds, the Hedemora chicken population declined significantly.

Svarthöna

The Swedish Black Hen, also known as the Swedish Black Hen or  Svarthöna, is a rare and near-extinction landrace breed of chicken originating from Sweden. As the name suggests, it is characterized by its all-black plumage, including its feathers, skin, beak, and legs. Even the inside of its mouth and its bones and organs are black, which is a very uncommon trait in the world of poultry.

Svarthöna are a hardy landrace and a kissing cousin to the Ayam Cemani, carrying the same fibromelanistic genes that make them all black, inside and out. The Svarthöna, being from Sweden, is known to be heartier than the Ayam Cemani. They have handled the cold and the heat here in New England quite well. The hens are good layers of small to medium cream colored eggs and are known to be good broodies.

The Swedish Black Hen's history is shrouded in mystery and folklore. According to local legend, these black chickens were brought to Sweden by the Vikings on their worldly excursions, although there is limited historical evidence to support this claim. Over time, the breed faced near extinction due to its rarity and the difficulty in breeding them.

The  Svarthöna is primarily kept for ornamental purposes and is often valued for its stunning and exotic appearance. .

Because of its rarity and unique appearance, the Swedish Black Hen has gained popularity among chicken enthusiasts and hobbyists, contributing to efforts to preserve and protect the breed. Organizations and breeders are working to increase its numbers and ensure its survival for future   generations.

Here are some key features of the Swedish Black Hen:

  1. Appearance: The Swedish Black Hen is entirely black, including its feathers, skin, beak, and legs. Its feathers have a beautiful iridescent sheen, which can appear green or purple under certain lighting conditions.
  2. Size: These chickens are of medium size, with a well-rounded body and a full, upright posture.
  3. Temperament: Swedish Black Hens are known for their calm and friendly nature, making them good additions to backyard flocks. They are generally docile and easy to handle, making them suitable for families and small-scale chicken keeping.
  4. Egg Production: While the Swedish Black Hen is primarily considered an ornamental or rare breed, they are also known to be good layers of medium-sized tinted eggs.
  5. Cold Hardy: Due to their origins in Sweden, these chickens are well-adapted to colder climates and can handle winter temperatures quite well.
  6. Rarity: The Swedish Black Hen is a rare breed in its native Sweden and internationally. Sweden has reported a mare population of approximately 400 surviving today.

Because of their rarity and unique appearance, the Swedish Black Hen is often sought after by chicken breeders and hobbyists who appreciate distinctive and visually appealing chickens.

It's important to note that breeding and maintaining rare chicken breeds require responsible practices to preserve their genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding. If you are interested in owning Swedish Black Hens or any other rare breeds, please message or email me today so together we can promote the conservation of these gorgeous Swedish endangered chicken breeds!
